CRUDE OIL ON THE HUDSON: VIRTUAL PIPELINE, REAL RISKS

Community Meeting and Presentations by Riverkeeper + Scenic Hudson + Hudson Sloop Club

WED JULY 9 | 6 – 8 PM | BASILICA’S NORTH HALL THEATER | FREE

Riverkeeper, Scenic Hudson and Hudson Sloop Club will host an informative presentation on the increasing hazards of crude oil transportation on the Hudson River. Have your questions answered by the experts on the “virtual pipeline” that has been created in New York State to transport millions of gallons of crude oil per day by rail car and river vessel despite its threat to public health, safety, and the environment.

The proposed expansion of an oil terminal in the Port of Albany could open up the Hudson to transportation of thick, heavy crude oil–possibly tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada–that, if spilled, sinks rather than floats and is impossible to collect or skim off the surface of a waterway. According to Riverkeeper, it’s the latest in a series of permits that the Department of Environmental Conservation has considered and in several cases, granted without first studying the environmental impacts or risk to
communities.

This team of Environmental Organizations urge the public to inform themselves on how to help protect the Hudson River and communities along the rail line by attending this informative lecture and presentation to learn more. Participants can also take action by urging the Department of Environmental Conservation to fully study the risks of the “virtual pipeline” by performing a comprehensive environmental impact review of all relevant pending and previously granted permits that allow crude oil transport in New York.
