Basilica Hudson Presents: Cassandra Jenkins with Ziemba. Native New Yorker Cassandra Jenkins writes with a singular voice and an impressionistic intimacy, making astute observations that dovetail neatly with her blend of folk and lush ambient pop. A veteran musician, Jenkins played in the touring bands of Eleanor Friedberger, Craig Finn, & Purple Mountains after coming up through the East Coast folk scene playing in her family’s band.

After signing with Ba Da Bing Records, Jenkins made her label debut in 2021 with the critically acclaimed An Overview on Phenomenal Nature, an enchanting, almost spiritual set recorded with Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman, Muzz). “Filled with people, stories, and dialogue, the New York songwriter’s second album flows like an emotional breakthrough, tying together disparate observations into a serene and unified vision,” says Pitchfork, who gave the record Best New Music.

Ziemba is the sometimes band/sometimes solo project helmed by composer, writer, producer and perfumer René Kladzyk, who until recently was working as an immigration reporter in El Paso, Texas. With songs described as “daringly unflinching” by Bandcamp, “electrifying pop and smart balladry” by The FADER, and “so cheesy that it could soundtrack a Tommy Wiseau sex scene” by Pitchfork, Ziemba is not into subtlety. These are big, all caps “FEELINGS” in sonic form. Ziemba’s most recent album Unsubtle Magic, released on Sister Polygon Records in December 2021, grapples with the holiday season through the lens of grief. The preceding album, 2020’s lauded True Romantic, is a collection of bombastic power ballads. Dive in.
