2020 in Basilica Green

Season 10: Year in Review

Since 2010, sustainability and climate resiliency have been at the core of Basilica Hudson’s mission, starting when co-founders Melissa Auf der Maur and Tony Stone reclaimed Basilica’s raw industrial space on the Hudson River and turned it into a solar-powered cultural destination.

2020 in Film

Season 10: Year in Review

A message from our Co-Founder and Director: “‘Since our founding in 2010, Basilica Hudson has been committed to bringing independent and innovative film to Hudson, NY’s waterfront. The power and magic of a shared viewing experience on the big screen is at the heart of our mission.’ That was always part of my introduction to our film screenings in our North Hall.

The word ‘screen’ means something very different during a pandemic when many of our lives have shifted to isolation, where human connection has primarily happened through screens.

2020 in Art

Season 10: Year in Review

A message from Melissa Auf der Maur, Basilica Hudson Co-Founder and Director:

“What role does art play in joy, change and cultural movements?

I grew up in the City of Montreal where it felt like art was everywhere and from everywhere. All cultures, shapes and sizes on the streets, in the schools, on the big stages and walls, to the underground ones. We founded Basilica Hudson in 2010 as an “art factory” in an industrial landscape, to be a place that immerses people in the experience and discovery of art and expression.

2020 in Music

Season 10: Year In Review

A message from Melissa Auf der Maur, Basilica Hudson Co-Founder and Director:

Upon first feasting my eyes on the Basilica building, “TEMPLE OF SOUND” is what was clearly communicated to me. From our annual 24-HOUR DRONE, Basilica SoundScape and Freak Flag Day, to smaller but no less significant sound-based happenings at Basilica in the last decade, we as a collective, can confirm this love at first sight hunch to be true.

2020 Year In Review

2020 was Basilica Hudson’s 10th Anniversary Season. After a decade of presenting innovative and genre-pushing programming, our vision for this transformative season was grand: bigger crowds, a diverse range of visiting artists, new marketplace events and an integration of environmental advocacy into every public program.

The momentum was palpable; then COVID-19 brought us to a sudden halt. Event postponements turned into cancelations, and like so many other arts organizations, nonprofits and independent venues, we had to completely rethink what was possible in 2020. But our commitment and energy did not recede.

Basilica Back Gallery Artist in Residence: Mary Mattingly

In October 2020, Basilica Hudson launched the Basilica Back Gallery Artist in Residence series with visual artist Mary Mattingly in collaboration with Toolshed. Mattingly’s work centered on creating an Ecotopian Library, a long term project that stems from the belief that art and ecotopian thought can be part of cultivating systemic social change, in the City of Hudson.

ANNUAL APPEAL: MUSIC AT BASILICA

In December of 2020, congress passed a COVID relief bill that includes the #SaveOurStages Act, which provides funding opportunities for venues facing economic hardships as a result of the pandemic. In 2020 we joined thousands of other performing arts centers across the country in lighting up our building for a “Red Alert” nationwide call to action (pictured below). This government support is a crucial step, but not a final solution, to saving performing arts organizations in 2021.
