2019 YEAR IN REVIEW
From documentary to drag, and from painting to performance art, our supporters and partners helped us keep the doors open, the films rolling and the music playing for our ninth season of programming. With 2019 drawing to a close, we’re taking a look back over the independent voices that rang through our reclaimed industrial solar factory walls this season.
Here are some highlights:
MUSIC
Our ninth season saw music return to every corner of our reclaimed art factory on the river, with new friendships and partnerships welcoming all genres of musical innovation to the stage. Our Back Gallery residents experimented with live music, our walls rang with contemporary classical, 24-HOUR DRONE continued its international journey, and our annual festivals – Basilica SoundScape and 24-HOUR DRONE – both honored and celebrated sound in all its forms.

COMMUNITY + GREEN
From The Hudson River School Painters to the green pioneers of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, the Hudson Valley has long been an important beacon of cultural and modern day environmental movements. The legacy of our region drives and inspires Basilica, and serving and responding to the place that we live has been at the heart of our mission since we launched our reclaimed industrial art factory back in 2010.

FILM & MEDIA
Our ninth season of programming saw filmmakers and film enthusiasts experiment with the boundaries of the cinematic experience. From Zia Anger’s fourth-wall breaking performance piece MY FIRST FILM, to deep-dive documentary exploration, to SQÜRL’s live rescoring of Man Ray’s work at Basilica SoundScape, our 2019 season in film and media saw moving image find a home at each one of our programs. The big screen is potent, and the shared experience of coming together in film can be truly transformative. We were grateful for the continued support of like-minded partners and friends, whose generosity meant we were once again able to present our film program FREE!

ART
Suspended lanterns, boundless cinema, sunrise tape loops, hypnotic stories of the body and powerhouse poetry. 2019 marked a multi-disciplinary season of art, with artists and makers transforming every corner of our industrial church, and local creative minds continuing to highlight the dazzling spread of Hudson Valley creativity across all our programs. We once again committed to placing the eclectic past and present of our river city as central muse for our Basilica Back Gallery Artist In Residence Series. We developed and fostered new partnerships with allies like OutHudson and Albany Symphony. We brought art and sound together at our annual programs including 24-HOUR DRONE and Basilica SoundScape. In our ninth season of programming, art was all around.
