For the past 7 years, 24-HOUR DRONE presented with Le Guess Who? has kicked Basilica Hudson’s season into bloom as a sacred wake-up call for the building in her winter hibernation. With all large gatherings on hold in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19, we brought DRONE to the airwaves and to your screens at home.

This page serves as an audio/visual archive of those experiences. Keep scrolling to explore DRONE AT HOME 2021 + DRONE AT HOME 2020

12 PM – 1PM | Le Guess Who? presents Prana Crafter & Richard Bolhuis

Prana crafter is William Sol, multi-instrumentalist and psychologist from the Pacific Northwest who focuses on creating deeply layered soundscapes and studying the relationship between music and consciousness. Visuals by RICHARD BOLHUIS
“In this video it was my aim to express the sense of freedom that I experience in the desolate regions of Groningen, the Netherlands. The northern skyscapes depict a timeless, poetic flow of images of nature running its natural course.”

Video by Richard Bolhuis
Edited by Bouke Mekel

About Le Guess Who?

Le Guess Who? is a city-wide celebration of global sounds and musical boundary-crossing. The 14th edition of the festival takes place 11-14 November 2021, in the city of Utrecht, The Netherlands. LGW? are 24-HOUR DRONE co-founders.

1 PM – 2 PM | Chloe Alexandra Thompson
Project title: “as we already know”

“as we already know” is a new work by Chloe Alexandra Thompson combining live processed field recordings, custom software, and distilled video feedback presenting droning patterns amidst a backdrop of transforming architecture. Through slow repetition of sonic and visual elements viewers are enveloped in a transfixing landscape of abstraction.

About Chloe Alexandra Thompson

Chloe Alexandra Thompson is a Cree, Canadian interdisciplinary artist and sound designer. Her work engages tactics of material minimalism to create site-specific installations that sculpt droning, maximist experiences out of space and sound. Using audio programming software, computational processing, and acoustic instruments, Thompson’s works envelop audiences into a state of equilibrium and fill rooms with discrete frequencies that engage physical and auditory sensation.

2 PM – 3 PM | Canada Resonance Agency
Canada Resonance Agency (CRA) is a rotating collective of Canadian musicians and sound artists assembled by the people at droneday.org. The Drone at Home 2021 performance is a collaborative A/V composition by the following artists: Cares, Beard Closet, Indweller (Colin Fisher and Ilyse Krivel), David Jones, Steff Juniper / Quivering, Mandelbrut, Matt Nish-Lapidus / New Tendencies, Red Panel, Xuan Ye

3 PM – 4 PM | LaMont Hamilton
Project title: “Seismicity or Tree Who Move Like Phantoms in the Night”

Seismically or Tree Who Move Like Phantoms in the Night is an extension or interlocutor of my iterative piece To Hear the Earth Before the End of the World. This long form, droning, work is very much informed by my time in Alaska and encounters with empyreal sonic events such as the many earthquakes and chinooks wind (föhn winds). Trees move like phantoms in this theatre of wind; Earthquakes shrug Earth’s shoulders grumbling in ancient languages.

About LaMont Hamilton

LaMont Hamilton (b. 1982) is a multidisciplinary artist based in New York. Hamilton deals with the spiritual, ecological and subconscious through sound, installation, performance, poetry and lens based medium. Hamilton has been the recipient of several fellowships and awards including the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship, Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship, Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, Artadia Award, ArtMatters Grant and more. His residencies include Skowhegan (’17), Camargo Foundation, MacDowell Colony (MF ’15), MFAH Dora Maar and Bemis Center for Contemporary Art among others.

4 PM – 5 PM | Drone Not Drones
Project title: “DRONE NOT DRONES: the brief one-hour drone

Drone Not Drones was started in 2013 to protest Obama’s drone program and to raise money for Doctors Without Borders. Originally just a festival DND has expanded into a record label and concert promotion for drone and drone adjacent music. The crown jewel of Drone Not Drones is the 28-hour drone held every winter in Minneapolis. Part benefit concert, part art project, part community event, the 28-hour drone is an annual concert where more than fifty acts from across the musical spectrum who unite to rotate on and off the stage to create a single uninterrupted 28-hour drone to protest the extrajudicial and immoral drone program and raise money for the victims of the United States military-industrial complex.

Featuring Luke Heiken, IOSIS, Neon Menhirs, Marks, Myslajek & Mer (John Marks, Crystal Myslajek, Meredith Gill), Lynn Avery & Cole Pulice

About the artists

Luke Heiken
Luke Heiken is the founder and curator of Drone Not Drones. Luke loves long notes and briefly plays some here on his pump organ.

IOSIS
Alex Bissen is an electroacoustic musician and sound designer who performs and collaborates as IOSIS. Working primarily with hardware synthesis means and techniques, Alex creates gnarled soundscapes, lush atmospheric and ritualistic sonic experience. Initially conceived as a fully improvisational entity, IOSIS has morphed into a flexible and malleable platform for expression that is operational from a strictly compositional or from a boldly improvisational approach. The music of IOSIS encompasses elements of drone, noise, and ambient forms and textures built upon improvisational foundation alongside more steadied compositional structures and considerations. IOSIS exists as a vehicle for constant experimentation and redefinition of boundaries and perceptions within a musically performative and emotionally transmutational artistic practice.

Neon Menhirs
Neon Menhirs is the solo ambient project of Saint Paul, Minnesota violist and synthesist Jonathan Waldo.

Marks, Myslajek & Mer
South Minneapolis sound artists and musicians John Marks, Crystal Myslajek and Meredith Gill from IE, Reflectors, Brute Heart, and more, coalesce for a special set of modular synthesis, percussion, keyboards, field recordings, and vocal looping.

Lynn Avery & Cole Pulice
Frequent collaborators in both LCM (Orange Milk) and Iceblink (Moon Glyph), with influences spanning from JRPG soundtracks, downtown music, to hauntological folk music, Cole and Lynn’s music lands in the realm of electroacoustic improvisation and ambient soundscapes

5 PM – 6 PM | Brian Dewan & Ross Goldstein
Project title: “B Natural”

B Natural is an hour long thread of sound with a slowly metamorphosing harmonic spectrum throughout. This electronic drone is occasionally diverted into mordents. An organic landscape of unisons, chords and voids coalesce around the thread throughout its natural lifespan. The instrumentation features Mellotron, melody gin and electric guitar.

About Brian Dewan & Ross Goldstein

Brian Dewan & Ross Goldstein
Brian Dewan is a visual artist and musician. He plays with The Raymond Scott Orchestrette, The Conservationists, The Foul Balls and the Monday Morning Mellotron ensemble. He lives in Catskill, NY.

6 PM – 7 PM | Inter(air)
Project Title: “Clarity/Chaos”

“Clarity/Chaos” is a silent film, scored by an eclectic group of musicians & audio artists with the task of exploring pathways between chaos and clarity. Two sides of the same coin who tend to lead one into the other. Using a combination of narrative and collaborative visual/audio arrangements, Inter(air) seeks to explore the deeper confines inside our minds, and grasp clarity from the clutches of this chaotic twenty-first century.

Featuring creations by Matt Luczak, Keri Toye (Sound VVitch), Tom Christie (Fraternal Twin), Nick Levine (Jodi), Drew Piraino (Primitive Air), Samuel Johnson (Somethingless), Mitch Van Dusen.

About Inter(air)

Inter(air) is a pathway to understanding collective channels of thought through the unification of sound and landscape. As a revolving door group of artists in collaboration, Inter(air) brings together experimental visuals and viewpoints with experimental artists to create new language in an ever changing world.

7 PM – 8 PM | NRRF B(b) Radio
Project title: “The Spiral Breath

When a white dwarf star dies it emits a stream of carbon atoms, carried across the galaxy like ash by cosmic winds. These atoms eventually reach other stars and their planets, thereby feeding their own cycles of life and death. The universe breathes, and so do we. Meanwhile, here on earth the current pandemic has focused our attention on both the dire risks and life-giving necessity of breathing, especially in close proximity to others. Spirals form in the human lung when carbon nanoparticles disturb certain surfactant molecules found there. Could those spirals be the imprint of the Milky Way inside our lungs? The carbon breathed out by stars draws an image when we inhale. Drawing breath is ever more precious. This drone meditates on these ideas across dynamics of scale: macro and micro cycles of starlight and breath, the vibrations of atoms, the bellows that power stellar forges which ‘exhale’ particles as breath and that we also breathe, and the indelible traces left in our bodies by these cosmic forces.

About NRRF B(b) Radio

NRRF B(b) Radio is an ongoing series of radio art programs created and performed by the current NRRF collective composed of sound and media artists Jonny Farrow, Anna Friz, Stephen Germana, Sarah Knudtson, Jeff Kolar and Peter Speer. Performing across the fields of improvisational and experimental sound, neighbourhood radio, and translocational radio art, the group assembled in Chicago in 2012 at the Experimental Sound Studio for a summer residency where they made long-form, improvised radio art based on B-movie and sci-fi themes, exploiting and deconstructing the genre for its tropes and stereotypes. The NRRF collective emphasize significant abstract improvisation and take as many tangents as possible. This results in an unpredictable mix of open fields of sounds, occasional narratives, spaceships that fail to launch, and even singing. Sometimes there is cake.

8 PM – 9 PM | Maria Chávez

Lebanese musician, producer and sound engineer Fadi Tabbal’s work consists of guitar pieces ranging from stripped acoustics to ambient and shoegazing-inspired treatments.  Often referred to as “the hardest-working man in Lebanon’s alternative music scene”, Tabbal relocated to Beirut in 2006 following studies in sound engineering in Montreal, Canada; he promptly established Tunefork Recording Studios, a specialized work-space which offers customized services including full band recordings, live sound, music production and composition. Tabbal is a full-time member of several Lebanese rock bands, including The Incompetents, Interbellum and The Bunny Tylers (with Charbel Haber), as well as electronic duo Stress Distress (with Anthony Sahyoun).

His work spans the fields of jazz, electronic music and free improvisation. This is his first performance on a church organ of this size.

– Name of piece: “ALAIRTIJAL 01” –

Yasmine El Baramawy is an Egyptian musician, Sound Artist, Oud performer and Composer based in Malmö, She develops an original sound universe around her practice of the Oud (modified and augmented by a low string) but also around concrete music and other electronic experiments. She plays one of the world’s oldest instruments yet she manages to work with a curious blend of different approaches and genres like Oriental, Rock and Classic Music. She builds sound installations mingling with poetry and spoken word added to her Oud live manipulations, her approach is characterized by a permanent sound research exploring both the acoustic tradition of the oud and the adventurous and transversal sound practices. She composed and performed live with experimental and dance theatre plays and wrote scores for film production in the alternative scene in Egypt.

Vincent Bahar is a Swedish-Iranian composer, pianist and percussionist based in Malmö. She fell in love with the piano at age eight, being particularly infatuated with the compositions of Debussy and Ravel. In 2017 she interrupted a life of academic studies at Lund University to return to her childhood dream. “I did one year of Phd studies in development economics, Vincent explains. Then I came to a point where I realised I had to follow my artistic path.”

She taught herself how to play the ancient Sufi frame drum called Daf and was recognized at the Malmö cultural scene for her unique way of combining experimental electronica with traditional Persian rhythms.

Over the last year Vincent has also returned to the piano, developing a distinctive personal sound residing somewhere in between dreamlike minimalism, neo-classicism and echoes of Persian reminiscence. After releasing her piano debut album 28 hours in July last summer, she was signed to label and art project KNING DISK in Gothenburg. Now she is working on her second album and exploring new ways of working with classical orchestration in Subchamber Ensemble.

Nathan Larson is a native New Yorker, a musician, author, curator, and an award winning film composer, having scored over 70 films and TV series. He has played in many bands, including A CAMP, SHUDDER TO THINK, and GIRLS AGAINST BOYS.

Larson is the co-founder of LUMEN PROJECT, an organization that brings long-form sound and light events to locations worldwide. In 2018-2020 the organization has presented major events in Stockholm, Iceland, and Beirut, Lebanon. He divides his time between Sweden and New York City.

DRONE AT HOME 2020

The 2020 DRONE schedule began with embedded streams presented by our partners, collaborators, artists originally scheduled to perform at the in-person event, and artists from THE DRONE WIDE WEB. THE DRONE WIDE WEB is a compilation of streams from DRONE alumni and those who responded to our open call for streams.

This page serves as an archive of the streams we were given permission to use, but does not feature the full lineup, which you can view HERE. Over 200 artists participated in our global DRONE AT HOME, making it the biggest DRONE to date. Read the full recap.

Below are archived streams from our old partners in DRONE , our more recent partners , and some even newer friends. This list also includes artists originally scheduled to perform during 24-HOUR DRONE 2020 at Basilica, indicated with a 🔭.

Automatic Aleatoric

Chicago, IL

24 hours streamed live out of the lab using 100% open-source software and vacuum tube oscillators and a programmed animation. It will slowly shift over a long period of time. Much like the background oscillator and video screenings normally present at Basilica’s DRONE — when nothing else is happening, in between other performances, or when you want a change of pace — zone out to this automatic aleatoric stream. Headphones suggested. Automatic Aleatoric is Charles G. Waldman, two-time DRONE alum.

🔭 Gesture of Friendship: 100 Years of the Theremin

Hudson, NY
Listen here

A duet with an empty Basilica.

This piece is an improvised duet between a theremin (played by DRONE Co-Curator SVB) and Basilica Hudson — the building itself (played by members of the Basilica team: Dr. Roman G. Horst, Sarah Roberts Hale and Allie Young). Performed at midnight, on Saturday, April 25, 2020.

From SVB: “I chose to play theremin as 2020 marks the centennial anniversary of the invention of the instrument by Leon Theremin. Afterwards, I live-mixed in a 75% slowed soundtrack to a short documentary film that Tony Stone, Miles Joris-Peyrafitte and Maxwell Paparella made of our very first 24-HOUR DRONE at Basilica in 2015. The result is a one-hour meditation on DRONE and its relationship to the building, Basilica Hudson.

All proceeds from the sale of this album will go towards Basilica Hudson — the organization. Hopefully in brighter days ahead, it can continue to present programs like 24-HOUR DRONE.”

Virtual Kiln Film Installation: Threshold

(Meditation Edit for Merwin Conservancy)
Sit down inside W.S. Merwin’s hand-built garden dojo. Immerse yourself in the sounds of his palm forest, deep in the Pe‘ahi Stream valley, on Maui’s rugged and rural north coast. This new edit of Threshold is a meditative video created by artist duo Susannah Sayler and Edward Morris (Sayler / Morris and The Canary Project), in collaboration with The Merwin Conservancy, as an offering of sanctuary in a time of crisis. The filmmakers wish to thank W.S. Merwin and Paula Merwin for generously welcoming them to film at their home in 2016.
