Basilica SoundScape, the weekend of music + art that’s been called “one of the more adventurously curated and intimate programs in the NY area” has revealed this year’s line up, info on Sunday Brunch + Marketplace and more! We are pleased to announce the three participating visual artists for this year’s SoundScape weekend, with site specific works by NY-based sculptor Cal Lane, sex-psyche Illustrator Heather Benjamin, and set designer Lisa Laratta. Co-curated by Brandon Stosuy (The Creative Independent), Brian DeRan (Leg Up! Management), Melissa Auf der Maur and Tony Stone (Basilica Hudson), Basilica SoundScape is a carefully curated two-day event that’s been called “the anti-festival” for offering a thoughtful mix of music, visual art, and literature.

“We are so excited about this year’s Basilica SoundScape, our fifth weekend devoted to music + art in our industrial church.” said Melissa Auf der Maur, Basilica Hudson Co-Founder and Director. “It is a very HEAVY line up, lots of loud guitars to match the scale and grit of our industrial factory, and as always we are striving to create an immersive pilgrimage to the Hudson Valley, where rural, industrial and urban collide. Dive into exceptional local food, freaky pop-ups of one of a kind things, camping, Hudson River School sunsets, and of course the delightfully haunted City of Hudson!”

We are proud to be aligned with the unveiling of The Creative Independent, an ad-free website that serves as an oral history of the creative process, featuring people working in music, books, film, and art, among other disciplines. TCI is supported by Kickstarter, and led by returning co-curator Brandon Stosuy, who is Editor-in-Chief of this new site.

“In my mind, The Creative Independent shares the same values as Basilica Soundscape—BSS is a small, carefully curated, multidisciplinary event focused more on artists than ad revenue. This seems unique to me, as far as festivals go…especially in 2016. It’s the same kind of ethos we’re espousing with The Creative Independent—we’re focusing on people, art, and ideas…not clicks. We see TCI as a real oral history, not something disposable or cheap,” added Brandon Stosuy, Editor-in-Chief, The Creative Independent.


Every year we have invited a very serious visual artist to activate our building at SoundScape. This year we have crafted an all-female counterpoint to the epic masculine weight of years passed, presenting the work of three women: Cal Lane, Lisa Laratta and Heather Benjamin, whose installations will be inside and outside, spilling into each area of the weekend, filling the Main Hall and grounds, added Auf der Maur. We are honored to be collaborating with many friends on these projects: Kristen Dodge, who has just opened the new SEPTEMBER gallery here in Hudson, on the project with Cal Lane; SoundScape devotee and Sacred Bones label head Caleb Braaten brought in Heather Benjamin; and headliners Explosions in the Sky introduced us to their collaborator Lisa Laratta. We are excited to invite a trilogy of women to try something very different in our space once again.

In past years, visiting artists featured have included Hudson-based artist and welder Kris Perry who brought his industrial-sized sound making MACHINES in 2012; in 2013 Matthew Barney presented an interactive music experience in collaboration with Jonathan Bepler, featuring Julianna Barwick, Evian Christ, Pig Destroyer, and Pharmakon; in 2014 Sterling Ruby created backdrops inspired by the space and his love of weekend-closer Swans; and last year Dan Colen expanded upon his tar and feather series, creating and displaying the massive paintings in the building.

Kristen Dodge and Cal Lane first worked together in Boston in 2008, and are thrilled to be collaborating again for Lane’s installation at Basilica, Hudson during SoundScape. Working with the raw architecture of the factory’s steel beams and industrial artifacts, Lane will install her rusted and cut i-beams, oil barrels, and steel drums. Installed both in the Basilica’s main room and an outside site, Lane’s plasma cut forms will integrate and disrupt. Custom lighting will cast laced shadows, blurring the viewer’s sense of the interior and exterior of the objects themselves, and of the surrounding context. The topics of her forms are panties, Persian rugs, and dancing devils.

Lane incises industrial objects with clashing, detailed imagery that recalls maps, medieval tapestries, architectural ornamentation, and bodily adornment. Notable works include I-beams cut into towers of lace, wheelbarrows converted into intricate doilies, a crushed automobile transmuted into patterned drapery, ammunition boxes split open and amended with narrative, and most recently oil tanks donned with laced panties. Lane often characterizes her work as industrial doilies rigorously and humorously demonstrating a “tasteless relationship of images.” She is interested in toying with oppositions, depleting the functionality of implicated objects and repositioning them as sites of aesthetic play.

“I am drawn to the relationships of industrial and domestic, as well as the physical and mental properties of strong and delicate, masculine and feminine, practical and frivolity, ornament and function. Lace intrigues me- its associations of hiding and exposing at the same time; like a veil to cover, or lingerie to reveal. It also introduces a kind of humor through the form of unexpected relationships, like a wrestler in a tutu. The absurdity of having opposing extremist stances prompts reaction and not rational understanding; the rational discussion arises in the search for how one thing defines the other by its proximity.” — Cal Lane

For the third year in a row, Writers in the Rafters presents immersive spoken word performances set in the rafters of our industrial building that captivate the imagination of attendees. This year will feature Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and Amber Tamblyn, both of whom will also participate in live conversations with The Creative Independent. Past participants have included Richard Hell, Holly Anderson & Chris Brokaw, Dorothea Lasky, Ariana Reines, Sarah Jean Alexander, Meredith Graves, Mira Gonzalez, and Mish Way.


Kiln Films is a video installation series inside Basilica’s former forge and foundry brick kiln. This weekend, Kiln Films honors the life and work of Tony Conrad with Outlier, a selected screening series of Conrad’s films and videos, curated by two former students (at SUNY Buffalo) and friends of Tony: David Gracon and Basilica Hudson partner Brandon Stosuy. Conrad passed away on April 9th, 2016 at the age of 76.

“Tony Conrad is one the great American artists of our time, yet to the world at large he remains criminally under appreciated.  Since the early 1960s, Conrad’s films and compositions have been the stuff of legend for artists and musicians everywhere. His vast, interdisciplinary repertoire has single-handedly created and influenced major film and compositional movements.” (Description taken from the promotions for the documentary Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present.)


Some of our favorite past and present SoundScape artists call New York-based Sacred Bones Records home, including Jenny Hval, Pharmakon and BSS 2016 artists Uniform. Created specifically for our weekend of music + art, Sacred Bones has amassed a fine collection of wares for their shop, including LPs (rare and otherwise), label merch, and an exclusive Heather Benjamin art zine to accompany her SoundScape exhibition.

Local literary heroes Publication Studio will be selling music, art and local-interest-related books at SoundScape all weekend. Pick up limited editions of Fowre I: Synth (a collection of interviews and essays about synthesizers), Remote Viewing: 500 Tableaux (which includes a cassette tape), Talking Walls (about the relatively unknown paleolithic structures of the Hudson Valley), and much more!


Brunch by Alimentary Kitchen

From 11 AM – 4 PM and FREE ENTRY

Featuring Nicole LoBue of Alimentary Kitchen, in addition to exceptional dinner for purchase over the weekend, she will be offering a spectacular morning feast. The brunch will be accompanied by a mini Basilica Farm & Flea – a preview of Basilica’s annual weekend marketplaces showcasing a collection of quality products presented by a diverse group of regional makers, farmers, and vintage collectors. Promoting the talents and resources within our community, Sunday’s happenings are free entry, family-friendly, rain or shine and open to all.

Basilica Hudson is proud to collaborate anew with Alimentary Kitchen in creating a one-of-a-kind culinary experience for Basilica SoundScape that is wholly original, full of flavor, sourced from local farms and beautifully made. Alimentary Kitchen will be serving dinner throughout Friday and Saturday programming as well as a Sunday brunch.

Basilica SoundScape attendees will have a chance to browse the cool and unconventional at our pop-up shop on Friday and Saturday nights.


For the full upstate New York experience, the greenest and most affordable place to stay is at the official Basilica SoundScape campground, Meadowgreens, located a 15 minute drive from Basilica Hudson at 1238 State Route 9H, Ghent NY. Your camping passes include scheduled shuttles to and from the venue, so no car is needed. Make a reservation at the official BSS campground for $30 per person/per night or $60 for a weekend pass (limited availability!). Not into camping? Hudson is home to numerous B&B‘s and Airbnb rentals too!

Camping is per person, per night (or weekend), and includes camp spot and scheduled shuttles to/from venue. Does not include camping gear, but cars/campers are welcome. Adventurous spirit encouraged! Hudson is two hours north of New York City and easily accessible by Amtrak or car.


About Heather Benjamin

Heather Benjamin has been self-publishing zines and books of her drawings since 2008. In addition to a multitude of self-published releases, her work has been professionally published as well. Her first full-length book, “Sad Sex”, is a retrospective collecting the first ten issues of her self-published zine of the same name, and was published by Desert Island in 2012. Her second book, “Exorcise Book”, is a collection of 70 drawings, published by A Bolha Editora in Brazil in 2013. Benjamin’s most recent book project, “Romantic Story”, is a self-published collection of drawings released in 2015 at the opening of her solo exhibition, Hard Feeling Girl, at STREAM Gallery in Brooklyn. She has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, recently traveling to Barcelona, Madrid, and Rio De Janeiro for shows. She holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design. Benjamin is currently based in Providence, Rhode Island.

About Lisa Laratta

Lisa Laratta received her BFA in Toronto, ON and worked for a number of years there as a scenic artist for theatre and film. She received her MFA in Theatrical Design from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008 and has been based in Austin since graduation. Lisa creates vast and detailed worlds for stage and screen using architecture, furniture, fabric, string, found objects, light and paint. When not freelancing as a scene designer, model-maker, graphic designer or scenic artist for such theater companies as Rude Mechanicals, Salvage Vanguard Theater and Saint Edward’s University, Lisa produces, designs and directs with the theatre company that she co-founded, paper chairs, winning critical acclaim and numerous awards.

About Kristen Dodge 

Kristen Dodge, formerly the Founder, Owner and Director of DODGEgallery in LES, NY, is currently the Founder, Owner and Director of SEPTEMBER, Hudson, NY. The inaugural exhibition at SEPTEMBER includes artists, Laurel Nakadate, Sara Greenberger Rafferty, Brie Ruais, Xaviera Simmons, Nancy shaver, Shinique Smith, and Agathe Snow, among others. Dodge has organized countless exhibitions, talks, and performances, and worked with over two hundred artists. She has launched the careers of young artists, and worked with internationally established artists. She produced the retrospective catalogs of Dave Cole and Nicole Cherubini. Along with gallery exhibitions programming, she has helped facilitate shows at institutions including Albright-Knox, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Broad Museum MSU, MASS MoCA, Museum of Fine Art, Boston, Norton Museum of Art, FL, and Savannah College of Art and Design. Her exhibitions and career have received international press coverage including Art + Auction, Art in America, Artforum, Artnet, Art Review, Flash Art, London Financial Times, Modern Painters, Sculpture Magazine, The Art Newspaper, The New Yorker, The New York Observer, The New York Times, Time Out Magazine, Wall Street Journal, and WNYC. She is a member of Art Table, and a Founding Member of the Whitney Museum Contemporaries. She has served on numerous boards and committees including Artists for Humanity, Artadia Junior Council, MFA Medal Awards, and Whitney Contemporaries. Dodge received her BA from Brown University and diploma from SMFA, Boston. She is the author of the column Art vs. Farm published by Artspace Magazine, and lives and works in upstate NY with her husband and menagerie of animals.

About Cal Lane 

Cal Lane (b. 1968, Halifax, Nova Scotia) lives and works in Putnam Valley, NY. Lane received her BA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and her MFA from SUNY Purchase. Lane has exhibited extensively including the Bertha and Karl Leubsdorf Art Gallery, Burlington City Arts (Burlington, VT), Hunter College (New York, NY), Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (Peekskill, NY), DeCordova Sculpture Park (Lincoln, MA), Foster Gallery, University of Wisconsin (Madison, WI), Museum of Art and Design (New York, NY), Musea Brugge (Brugge, Belgium), the Musée des Manufactures des Dentelles (France), The Museum of Craft and Design (San Francisco, CA), Musée des Tissus et des Arts décoratifs de Lyon (Lyon, FR), the Design Center at Philadelphia University (Philadelphia, PA), Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (Scottsdale, AZ), Socrates Sculpture Park (Long island City, NY), and the 18th Biennale de Sydney (Sydney, Australia). She was commissioned by MTA Arts & Design to install a major work at the Knickerbocker Station, Brooklyn, NY. Lane has been the recipient of several fellowships including, Canada Council for the Arts, Nova Scotia Talent Trust Award, Socrates Sculpture Park Fellowship, and Steckler Scholarship For The Arts. Lane’s work has been covered by ArtForum, Art News, New York Times, and Sculpture Magazine, among others. In the fall of 2016, Lane will have a solo exhibition at ArtMur in Leipzig, Germany.


Brandon Stosuy recently joined Kickstarter to lead a new project called The Creative Independent. He previously worked as Director of Editorial Operations at Pitchfork. Stosuy is a Music Curator at MoMA PS1 and the Broad Museum in L.A, and co-curates the Tinnitus music series with Adam Shore. For the past several years he and the artist Matthew Barney have collaborated on an ongoing series of live events and publications. ADAC, their most recent book-length project, was published in 2013 by Dashwood. He curated the multi-media art/music exhibition, Rural Violence, which opened in August 2015 in Troy, New York (with book to follow). It has since been expanded and re-staged at Barney’s studio, and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. His anthology, Up Is Up, But So Is Down: New York’s Downtown Literary Scene, 1974-1992, was published by NYU Press in 2006, and he has a children’s book, Music Is…., forthcoming on Simon & Schuster in October 2016. He lives in Brooklyn, with his wife and two children.

The Creative Independent is a website that serves as a growing archive of the creative process. We’re a small staff supported by Kickstarter, a company whose mission is to help bring creative projects to life. While we may sometimes overlap with Kickstarter, The Creative Independent is its own entity, covering both the well-known and the unknown. On TCI, we’ll publish interviews with creative people that won’t only focus on a subject’s latest work; instead, we’ll explore ongoing themes, the process of making, and how creativity enriches the lives of people in the everyday world. Brian DeRan attended Maryland Institute College of Art. Following college Brian worked briefly in film working with John Waters and Matthew Barney. He was the tour manager for Bonny “Prince” Billy and June of 44. In 2000 he founded Monitor Records, where he signed Cass McCombs, Oxes, Big Bear and many others. Brian is an owner of The Ottobar, an iconic Baltimore music venue, and is the owner of LEG UP! management whose roster has included Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, Battles and currently Neon Indian, Black Lips and Xenia Rubinos amongst others. He is also visual artist who resides between Los Angeles and Joshua tree, California and is currently working on a curating an exciting night of programming in Los Angeles in the fall.


Far from a typical music festival, Basilica SoundScape features live concert performances, conceptual sound performances, author readings, installations, collaborations, curated local vendors and artisans, on-site activities and more, creating an immersive, innovative weekend of art, music, and culture.
